My trim gauge quit working last year, boat is coming out of storage here in a couple weeks and I am contemplating replacing the unit before taking it to the lake. My research tells me part # 3841840 is the latest number for the replacement, selling for around $200. most places. I think I can do the replacement as my outdrive is already off the boat, so access should be easier to route the new wires through the transom.

I try to keep all systems of my boat working properly and it bugs me that the gauge doesn't work. But am I just getting ready to throw away $200 because I will be right back into this position in another year or two, with another defective unit. Is there a reason that these units seem to fail so frequently that I can correct or avoid while installing the unit to make it last? Am I just throwing my money away and should I just accept my broken one?

To answer your question as why the go bad (volvo's) who knows.
Yes your just throwing your money away.
Best advice is to learn how to use it by sound and feel. It's only going to go bad again

I used to feel the same way - everything worked except the dead needle on the trim gauge. My wires corroded and broke off and like Thalasso said and you already realized, $200 is a lot to drop just to see the needle move again. You don't need it.
