volvo sx drive question

First time I have ever pulled off a outdrive. So far so good, but there is so much confusion on grease, sealant, etc. I have a 2000 Glastron with a SX outdrive and have the workshop manual. I have decided to change the bellows. It states that I should use a sealant for the bellows,"Volvo Penta P/N 1161099 gasket sealing compound", but I read a lot of people say not too. Plus to use "Volvo Penta Grease P/N 828250", is this just "marine grease"? Then for the water coolant passage o-ring use 3M Adhesive. Not sure what kind. Last but not least to use a "moly" grease on the splines. Just looking for some layman's terms too all this. I can buy all but all this but it is around $75 for all of this delivered. Just want to make sure it is necessary or is there an alternative without the "volvo name"? Thanks for the help.

Re: volvo sx drive question

If the bellows are orginal or you just bought it and dont know the history then I too would replace the them for sanity sake.

I think VP says no sealant, I have same drive and factory manual and I am pretty sure nothing about sealant. Did mine a while ago, used none. Same with water passage o-ring, sometimes i will put a dab of grease to hold it in place, that's it. I think spine grease is a moly based grease, I started to research it then decided one tube would last me a lifetime ad just bought some locally (Seirra brand). Prior to that I just used high quality grease.

Are you looking at factory manual? Aftermarket manuals are junk and filled with misinformation.

Re: volvo sx drive question

Like Mikeneal above I do not use any sealer/bellows glue.

I've pulled my (2003) VP drive myself three/four seasons in a row now and replaced the bellows for the first time this season. The factory bellows install obviously did not use any sealer, and the only time the water/O-ring was sealed was by my marina when I let them check the drive back in 2006. His exact comment to me when I started performing the job myself was they typically use sealer to hold the o-ring during install. Like Mike, I just use a small amount of grease to hold the o-ring and deter corrosion in that area.

Grease: Yep, just a good molly grease from my local auto parts store. Lube the splines well, yet do not put the grease on the two "shaft" O-rings/area. I use a good all purpose oil there.

You really should pull the drive at the end of each season to inspect, check alignment and re-lube. I grease splines and replace the three O-rings each time the drive is off.

Well done venturing into your own boat maintenance. The Volvo drive is extremely easy in regards to this seasonal task - and replacing the bellows is near painless. Have fun and save some cash!
