Volvo sx gear ratio question

I have a 1996 volvo sx 1.97 ratio. I would like to know how to turn it into a 1.66 ratio. It seems like the 1.97 came with the 3.0 motor.. I have a 5.0 ford and am able to compensate with prop pitch but would like to make it a 1.66 which is what it should have. The drive was on the boat when I bought it and didnt know it until well after the fact. I saw where lower units are advertised as fitting 1.66 or 1.97 so is the change made in the upper unit only? Thanks for any help

Ratio is changed by changing out the lower.
