We were out last weekend and in the middle of the day (after trimming up 3/4 and spending about 2 hours at the sandbar) we filled the tubes and set out for some tubing. I attempted to trim back down (after getting to deeper water) and found that the trim would not work. We tried several things on the water to get the trim back but nothing worked. We did manage to eventually blow the fuse and so then decided to call it a day and putt back to the launch.

Today I went out to the boat (after reading several detailed posts here) to see if I could troubleshoot the problem. Here is what I found:

When running the trim both up and down I could hear the click of the relays.

I checked the voltage to the motor and find 12.5 volts both up and down.

I pulled the motor and found that it was full of water. OUCH!!

I cleaned and dried the motor. Removed a slight amount of rust. Cleaned with WD-40 and reassembled. I cleaned the pump and connected the motor electrics and tested the motor, IT TURNED BOTH WAYS WITH SOME POWER!

Great, I thought.

I reconnected the motor to the pump. Flipped the switch up and... click... ok, down... click... hmmmm

I pulled the motor again and tested it, ran fine. I manually turned the pump with a flat bladed screwdriver, turns pretty easy, definately not locked...

So I reconnected the motor and tried again. WOO-HOO! It works!! So I tested, and tested. Ran the outdrive up and down about 4 or 5 times. I let the system set for a few minutes to go get the wife and brag that I had saved us a few hundred dollars ~this time~. Well, not so fast young man. I ran the outdrive down, then back up. Again the drive went up fine, time to take her down. RRRRRRRREEECCHHT! It came to a screetching halt. Then only the familiar click, click.

Whats up guys??? Is this the motor, pump, or something else? Is there more to do to determine the problem? I wanted to remove the entire unit but was afraid to disconnect the hydraulic lines without some guidance from you experts. What is envolved with this process?

Here are some pix of the unit. I believe that it is not the original unit for my 2003 Starcraft Aurora. This is because the mounts have obviously had bolts where there are no mount holes on my boat. Also, note the motor serial number which starts with 79-. I believe this to be the year of manufacture though I will yield to you experts to determine if the tirm unit pictured would have been installed on a 2002 VP 3.0GL. If not, I am wondering if my dealer needed a good drive or had to replace mine because it was bad. Either way, I think I got a stinker here... <sigh>

Thanx in advance!!
