Volvo SX outdrive / prop grinding against case

Hi, I have a 1999 Monterey Montura 210 with a 5L Volvo and an SX outdrive. I have a factory stamped aluminum 17P prop. I bought a used 23P aluminium from a small repair shop as a spare. The 23P is not stamped Volvo but fits on the shaft. The problem is when you tighten the prop shaft nut it hits the housing pretty hard (the thrust washer is in place). The 17P hits the housing a little but works fine. I tried the 23 at just a little past hand tight and it made a terrible grinding noise - had to bring it back to the dock in reverse. So has anyone else ran into this? Do they make a shim / washer for cases like this? Thank you.

The prop is not for an SX, if you keep using it, you are going to destroy the lower unit. Just because the splines fit doesn't mean it's the right prop.

Often when you change props to a different brand, you also need to change the thrust washer to one provided by that same propeller company.

I suspect you have the wrong thrust washer...or are missing the thrust washer. There should be no rubbing period....with EITHER prop.

The only way to know what thrust washer you need, is to know what brand and model of prop you have.

Thanks craze, I will have to try a thrust washer of the same brand. I never thought of that. Does a thrust washer ever wear out? Don - so could that prop possibly be for a older Volvo outdrive or some other brand? You would think the manufacturers would make them fit exactly the same or make them miss by a mile but not very close.?

Don, do you or does anybody have an idea what outdrive this prop will fit. If it is not for an SX then I'd like to get rid of it on CL or something. I will double check but I'm pretty sure there is not a manufacturer name / application or anything like that stamped on it.

The factory SX washer is steel and a bit thicker than the brass washer that comes with flo-torque hubs,I use the stock steel with mt factory prop and my Stiletto, but switch to the brass washer when using my Apollo or Merc props.

Thanks ramster. You and craze were right. I took it in to the dealer where I bought it from for a few other problems. They checked the thrust washer and put a thicker one on and it is fine now.
