Boat Details: 97 Four Winns Sundowner 205 - 5.7GL Volvo - SX Outdrive
Usage: Chesapeake Bay
Towards the end of last season, I began to notice a light oil sheen behind my boat when moored for any length of time. When I pulled the boat out to winterize and inspect the tilt/trim hydraulics, I could see what appeared to be a metal ring around the ram which had pulled away from the cylinder (see pic). I tapped it back in place against the cylinder and wiped away some oil. Fast forward to today - as part of winterization, I placed a 55gal clear plastic bag over the entire outdrive to keep snow/water out. On the inside of the bag, I now have a pinkish, oily puddle. As I removed the bag, I could trace the oil back to where the ram moves in and out of the cylinder - the same cylinder I had tapped in the metal ring back in late fall. So, my questions are:
- Is replacing the seals on the trim/tilt cylinder (seal kit #3854247) a
job that requires pulling the outdrive completely off, or can I do one
side at a time with the drive still on the boat?
- Can anyone recommend a repair manual that has excellent detail (with
pics) to do the job?
- Any tips or tricks that would help, or "gotcha's" to avoid in doing a
job like this?
- Does saltwater cause premature failure on the seals if the boat is
kept in the water for 2-3 weeks before being pulled for a fresh water
bath in the driveway?
Thanks!
