Volvo Tilt Mechanism Question

Hi all. My port drive will not tilt.

I found the po removed the tilt motor, and removed the electical box and upper housing exposing the worm gear etc.

The issue is the gear is stripped from the motor drive to the tilt shaft. The motor input rotates freely with no action on the vertical shaft. I take it this is pretty common.

Additionally, the locking pin (Pawl?) is locked in. My dad figured it should release in forward gear, but no luck. I can jump in and try to release it...no biggie there. Should it come up easy by lifting after I release the locking pawl?

Thanks,

Chay

Re: Volvo Tilt Mechanism Question

Heres the oem part on Iboats, #6

If that is what you need.

You may be able to find an entire lift assembly for the same money on ebay.

The outdrive is heavy, so tipping it up manually while you're in the water may be tricky. But yes it will pivot up once the pawl is released. I'd just repair/replace the lift mechanism asap.

Re: Volvo Tilt Mechanism Question

Adeneo, this is what I believe is toast. I have to disassemble it to be 100% sure. What language is that website in?

Captmello, I'm not able to view that website...it's for the USA only somehow. I'm in Canada so it won't let me see it. Free trade eh?

I'd like to replace the mech, but it requires removing the gear assembly and tilt shaft from the inner transom shield (2 allen head screws) but there is a gasket between the lower flange and the transom shield, and I think if I pull this off I will get wet! There is also some orings on the shaft which seal in the transom shield I think ( I saw these on a diagram). The boat is in the water until I can get a trailer for the boat (Next week).

Can anyone confirm that this seal and the orings holds the exterior water out?

Thanks,

Re: Volvo Tilt Mechanism Question

The link I posted is through iboats OEM Volvo parts. Not sure why you can't see it. The worm gear kit is $270, US.

I also have had my tilt mechanism apart and it doesn't look very easy to change out the parts. the wheel is easy but I'm not sure about the the other piece. I'm almost sure you couldn't do it while the lift was in the boat, let alone in the water.

I'm not sure if you'll get wet or not. It depends on where the water line is in relation to where the tilt pokes through the transom shield. I think your right though, good chance for water to come in.

Heres is a used unit without a motor on ebay, looks to be in fair shape.

which ever way you go, I would break down the assembly, replace all the seals and regrease the unit.

Good luck.
