Hi, I bought this boat used and am slightly confused. I need to change the outdrive oil, and there is a dipstick on top of the outdrive, and a plug on the bottom by the skeg. i drained the oil (milky!),now do i fill from the top? Also what weight oil? It's a 3.0 liter with a 2000 SX-M with 1.97 ratio. Any help would be awesome! thanks !

If you have water in the drive you really should pull the drive and do a pressure test, or have a repair shop do it for you.

Remove the rear cover from the drive. It's held on by three bolts. With the cover off you will see the shift linkage. To the right of the linkage you will see the oil level plug. Remove this plug and fill the unit from the bottom using Volvo DuraPlus or Mobilube 1 SHC fully synthetic SAE 75W-90 gear lube. Be sure to replace ALL the plug seals. Filling the unit to fast can create air bubbles so fill slowly until the oil runs out of the oil level plug, reinstall the plug, then remove the fill hose from the bottom and install the plug, check the oil level with the dip stick in the top of the drive (level is check by screwing the dipstick in fully then removing and reading level on the stick. If it is showing low you can slowly add to fill thru the dip stick hole. Recheck after running engine.

If you can't afford a pressure test, you will never affford to repair the damage the water IS GOING to cause.

I have a question about re-filling the gear oil from the bottom. How is that done, through the filler plug or the drain plug and if the drain plug what do I need to do that?

A pump from Walmart, that screws on the lube bottle.
And a manual.

The plug on the bottom, never fill from top, you will get air pocket in it and kill the drive (will fool you and not get proper amount of oil in it. The early SX had weak prop shaft seals and I bet that is cause for milky oil, but like everyone said get pressure test and go from there.
