:confused:long time boater new to forum I read about and pm'd a member (Brian) about his "poor acceleration" problem. it's exactly the same as i had and have ruled out all the usual suspects. the following is what I sent brian: Hi brian, did you ever figure out what was up with your hole shot? I have had the same issue with my 5.0gxi (2004) in a chaparral 210 ssi for years now starting at about 50 hours. I bought the boat new from a dealer in kansas and they gave me the drive ratio that people who boat there use. I boat and live at higher elevations (4500-6000 ft) and have to run a 17p prop in order to get a 5.5 second holeshot with a sub 40 mph top end (rev limited Just me ,full fuel). New, at 1800' elevation, i had a 3 second or so holeshot with a 19p vp factory aluminum prop. with the 19p vp prop in Denver, where i live a 8+ second holeshot is typical. Have not had the boat lower than 3800' msl elevation since i first noticed the problem so i can't exclude the possibility that my 1.6 gear ratio is the sole culprit (an expensive fix) and kick myself for not ordering the high altitude gears in the first place. I do think that something else is slowing the acceleration down as well, but have never figured any thing else out. any new ideas out there?
Thanks in advance, ScottyMac
ps I should add that this engine purrs like a kitten and i hit the rev limiter with the 19 inch prop too in denver (eventually)

Re: vp 5.0 gxi acceleration problem

Hate to say it, but that is exactly why Volvo uses different gear ratio's at higher altitudes
You can replace only the lower unit to get the right gear ratio, don't need the whole outdrive. You could also go to the DP version lower unit. That will really help out your hole shot, along with fuel milage, rpm at cruise etc.

Thanks Don, I guess i'm in Denial about the ratio thing- it's just so expensive to change..
