Hello all. I have a 1995 VP 5.0 Fi. It has been running fine. Now have a new problem.

Motor starts and will run for about 15-20 seconds, while ideling, has a small surge, about 100 rpm and shuts off.

Will start back up, and if you try to put in gear will go forward (or back ward) at very low throttle for less than 30 seconds, then will have a small surge, and shut down.

Will start back up, and idle, if try to put in gear will accelerate for a few seconds, have a much larger surge in RPMs, and shut down.

I have been hearing a "squeeling" sound on start up which i think is belt slip, but the squeel has beeen more pronounced in the few days leading up to my most recent problem.

*****
My thoughts are the squeeling is the alternator belt and or alternator itself. Seems to be not charging the batteries as well as it should. Could a bad alternator and/or weak batteries cause the problems described?

Any other thoughts? I do not have a code reader. Pulled fuel water seperator and there is no water in fuel. Fuel is ethanol free.

Thanks Ed

Sounds like fuel starvation. Maybe check the fuel line and replace the filter?

The squealing is probably the alternator belt. My 5.8 does the same sometimes when the battery gets low and the recharge load is high.

No idea but guessing on the surging. Sorry.

The alternator belt squeal was my guess as well. Is there any other fuel filters on the 5.0 Fi based on the Ford EFI, other than the fuel water seperator filter below the low pressure fuel pump assembly? Would a bad alternator and weak batteries give the symptoms described? Thanks, Ed

I've also got a 5.0Fi. I would check to make sure your battery(ies) are fully charged and the connections to the battery(ies) are clean and tight. I suspect you've got a low or bad battery since the alt. belt is squealing. After that, I would verify that your alternator is charging.

In my experience these motors are very sensitive to voltage fluctuations/low voltage.

I will check the batteries and alternator today. Thanks for the input. Ed

New Alternator and belt, batteries fully charged, new fuel water seperator filter, same problem.

Starts fine. Runs for 20-30 seconds and then shuts off. Can re-start with no problems. I am guessing I need a code reader? I have heard EEc-IV code scanner for an 1981-1995 Ford. Thanks, Ed

yep, EEC-IV scanner is a good tool to have with these boats. Check codes and let us know what you find. These kinds of problems can be frustrating....But you've got to start with the simple things then work your way down the list. I'll ask around in my Ford circles for any other thoughts.

Ran the code scanner. Says fuel pressure. New Low pressure and high pressure fuel pumps, had warranty left on both.

Still having problem. Starts up, runs a few seconds, and then dies, with a "sigh" kinda sound.....

Is there a fuel pressure regulator, and would it cause this problem. I tried to take it to the local Volvo Penta shop, and he said he doesn't have the test equipment to work on Ford Motors. VERY FRUSTRATED

I think i would find another mechanic. I don't think weather it is a Ford or GM motor it will make a diff. It is a Volvo electronics system mated to whomever the manf. of the engine is

I believe Ford made the fuel injection system for that motor. Good luck finding parts for it. Was only used for a couple of years during the joint venture with OMC

I say yank it and put on a carb!!! :)

Believe me, I have thought about going the carb route, but there are just as many folks on here with carb problems....

Frustrated for sure. Wife angry because boat not running, kids mad because summer is here......

Anyone have any recommendations for Volvo Penta Service on the "charcoal" Ford Motors in North Florida or South Georgia?

If you had a carb, you would have had it fixed by now. That's the beauty of the carb.

If you had the GM engine and a few years newer, I wouldn't be giving you the same advice.

Be interesting to hear what DonS thinks about this system and your problem. I agree that you need to find someone who is familiar with it because its going to be too expensive and take to much time to just throw parts at it.

Re: VP 5.0Fi starts, but shuts off, or surges

I would love to have some direction for Don S, the guru. My thought is something is shutting down the high pressure fuel pump, versus the low pressure. The low pressure pump is cycling on with the ignition, and should be filling the fuel Reservoir on the back of the motor. There should be enough fuel in the reservoir to run for more than a few seconds. Either that, or something is shutting down power to the distributor.......Stumped, I am, that's for sure.

You can test that theory easily. Just pull the relays and bypass them and turn them on and see if you still have the problem.

You have a factory manual?

I do not have the factory manual, I have the SELOC manual. I know where the low pressure pump relay is located. How do I bypass it?
