Looks like my rough idle and lack of high end power is now traceable to a burnt valve and lack of any compression on my number 7 cylinder. Have been researching replacement heads in case that is the route I need to go. Engine has not been dismantled yet. Been finding some conflicting info on the heads for this engine. The Volvo Penta Store has the VP #3856929. When I look this up it appears to cross to a casting number of 14102193. I assume that is the GM uses to identify the head. These heads are readily available and relatively cheap as remanufactured items. Following this on several engine boards though it appears that there is some debate over whether this is or is not a vortec head. Anyone know?

Ayuh,.... The true Vortec fast burn heads from GM come in only 2 castin' numbers,....

# 906, 'n # 062,....

Some, but not all of the #906 have special exhaust valve seats pressed in,....
The remainder of the # 906s, 'n the # 062s use plain ole induction hardened exhaust valve seats,....
The "Good" 906s were used in 3/4 ton, 'n 1 ton trucks for durability, which makes 'em Perfect for a boat motor,...

In order to go Vortec, you'll need a different intake,....

Thanks. The intention would be to stay stock and not change anything with the intake manifold and TBI. I am astounded at how readily available the heads are and the price for a set of recondition ones. Almost makes no sense to try to repair and have machined the existing ones. My experience with engine rebuilding was a 60's vintage Mercedes 230Sl and I don't even want to begin to tell you the prices on those heads and the valve train parts if you can even find them anymore!

those are not vortec heads. those are typical GM 65cc high-swirl TBI heads from 1987 on to about 1995. slightly better than the prior 76cc heads

and you are correct, you can buy a complete set of new SBC heads for a reasonable cost.
