VP 5.7 gxi (1997) - SX temperature sensor ??

I MAY have an issue with the cooling system on my port engine. I lost power on that engine, after a 20 minute run from Port Clinton to Mouse Island. After looking at the instruments, I shut down the engine and returned to port (60 minute trip) using only the starboard engine.

When approaching the dock to tie up, I restarted the port engine and it worked normally while docking. However the analog temperature gage did not work (reads minimum temperature). While running the engine tied to the dock the engine surface temperatures appear normal - but the sensor still shows minimum temperature.

Being wary I pulled the raw water pump and inspected the (one year old) impeller and it was in excellent condition. So now what ?

The engine appears to have two possible temperature sensors, one of which may have failed. One is on the thermostat housing and the other is on the starboard side block drain petcock. Also the Faria gage itself may be defective. How should I proceed in addressing this problem ? Resistance checks ? voltages at the gage ?

I also changed the fuel /water separator filter - just in case it may have contributed to the power loss on this engine. But I did not see any water when the filter was drained. However I have not run it hard to prove the engine is OK - because of the lack of a temperature sensor on this engine.

Help!! How would you suggest I diagnose and repair this temp gage problem.

Thanks for any ideas.
