Boat will idle fine and start out okay too, but when I throttle up it will start to cut out then rev up and back down and up again constantly. There is a loud whining noise coming from the high pressure fuel pump. I have unplugged the high pressure pump and the noise goes away. I assume this is my problem? I talked to the dealer this morning and he says to replace the whole assembly for roughly $1000. But I see I can get just the high pressure pump for $300. Is it necessary to replace everything or will I be okay replacing just the high pressure pump?

Don't know if this is the same pump as mine but I just order the entire Fuel Pump Kit for $291.
The picture show that it is the whole assembly but I will see when it gets here.
Two pumps, o-rings and two filters for $611.
They are not hard to replace as there are 3 mounting bolts, two line and some hoses to connect.
I plan on doing it as soon as I get mine Thursday.
Read my post under Can only get 3000RPM.

Re: VP 5.7L GSI PEFS Fuel Pump problem

I found the fuel pump kit for $291 on here today before I posted my problem. It does show the whole assembly, but with a quote of nearly $1000 just for the part from my dealer, I couldn't figure out why there would be such a big difference even with his markup. So I called about it to see if it was the whole assembly and the lady wasn't sure and said she could email the tech dept. and get back to me. She called back and turns out that kit is only the high pressure pump and o-ring. I have found the entire assembly new on ebay for $625. I'll probably go that route.

If you do a search on here there is a whole host of pump problems and one about rebuilding the unit cheaply.

The high pressure pump can be changed out by itself. You don't need to buy the entire assembly.

If you only change the high pressure pump, you may not be addressing root cause of the failure which may be paint particles peeling from somewhere else inside the the assembly.
