I have a 1987 Volvo Penta AQ-275 outdrive on my boat. The bushings (upper and lower) in the steering fork are shot. Is it possible to remove the fork and replace the bushings without removing the entire outdrive? Neither my Clymers or Seloc manuals say much about the procedure.

Thanks for your help in advance,
Andy

Re: VP AQ-275 steering fork bushings

Just happen to be working on one myself. a 290 dp. if you are talking about the fork item 2 , fig. 21 on page 407 ( CLYMER),you will have to seperate the intermedate housing from the upper and lower housing. Fork pivots on the cooling water supply tube going thru this housing. if you are talking about the fork like assy that comes thru the hull and turns lt.-rt. ,I dont know how it is replaced yet. If you split the unit, keep an eye out for expected future direction on pressure/vacumme test on this site. that test has got to be done before reinstillation. good luck fred

Re: VP AQ-275 steering fork bushings

Fred,
I need to replace the two bushings in the steering fork that goes thru the transom. I'm trying to find out if I need to remove the outdrive in order to pull the fork out of the transom. The last time I removed the outdrive for u-joint inspection/maintenance, I had a bear of a time trying to get the bellows back on.Several hours and lots of cussing!
On further inspection, it looks like I may be able to pull the fork out without unbolting the outdrive. I think I've got enough room to remove the steering helmet, unbolt the fork from the steeing linkage, and slide it down through transom shield.
