Yesterday experienced sudden grinding noise when tried to put in forward or reverse. No noise in neutral. Boat had run fine for 30 minutes before noise occurred suddenly as I was maneuvering into position at the bait dock. No smell or smoke that we could tell. Prop was spinning but not getting any propulsion. Sounded like noise coming from transom area. Shut it down and towed back to slip. Entire drive was serviced in June. Checked the cotter pin in the shift cable and it was fine. Any thoughts?

Could have lost the spline between the upper gearbox and lower. Could have a bad upper gear box.

Pull the boat on the hard and pull the drive

What kind of Hub system does your prop have? Pressed in rubber slip or one of the removable hubs, solid plastic or rubber/plastic/metal?
