I am working on my brothers evenrude VE 70 TLETS
It had water on the number 1 and 2 spark plug.
I did compression ck.
1--75
2--115
3 -- 120

1993--70 h/p
I pulled the head and gasket was bad. Got that on order plus oem manuel.
I am going to change the water pump and need to know where to disconnect the shift linkage.
I would like to know how to disable the vro because I don't believe it is putting enough oil to it.
When I pulled the head there was a little sign of scoring in each cylinder. It fouled out on number 1 is why I was working on it.
If I can get it to go the summer we are going to tear it down for a complete overhaul this winter.
If you guys can help me out here it will be deeply appreciated.
BTW it had good spark on all three cylinders

Re: VRO 1993 evenrude 70

Besides the following, I strongly suggest that the carburetors be thoroughly cleaned so as to eliminate any lean mixture running possibility.

(VRO Changeover Judgement Call)
(J. Reeves)

The VROs first came out in 1984 and have been upgraded quite a few times. In my opinion, back around 1988, they had perfected them but I think that they were upgraded even more since then. As long as the warning system is operating as it should, I feel quite at ease with them.

Some boaters have voiced their thoughts such as "What if that overpriced plastic horn should fail while I'm under way for some reason, and the VRO decides to fail five minutes later?" Obviously that would result in a big problem which really brings their fears into view.

The word "ease" is the key word though. If one has the slightest feeling of being ill at ease with that setup, then they should take the route they feel more at ease with. A judgement call each individual would need to make on their own.

********************
(VRO Pump Conversion To Straight Fuel Pump)
(J. Reeves)

You can convert the VRO pump into a straight fuel pump, eliminating the oil tank and VRO pump warning system, but retain the overheat warning setup by doing the following:

1 - Cut and plug the oil line at the engine so that the oil side of the VRO pump will not draw air into its system. Trace the wires from the back of the VRO to its rubber plug (electrical plug) and disconnect it.

2 - Trace the two wires from the oil tank to the engine, disconnect those two wires, then remove them and the oil tank.

3 - Mix the 50/1 oil in the proper amount with whatever quanity fuel you have. Disconnect the fuel line at the engine. Pump the fuel primer bulb until fuel exits that hose with the tint of whatever oil you used. Reconnect the fuel hose.

That's it. If you want to test the heat warning system to ease your mind, have the key in the on position, then ground out the tan heat sensor wire that you'll find protruding from the cylinder head. The warning horn should sound off.

Thanks joe, I still haven't completely been convienced that the vro is bad here. Just looking for options for this situation. I rebuilt the carbs before I did anything else to it so they are in good shape.

The factory water pump kit includes upgraded items such as thermostat spring, re-located water tell-tale fitting, etc.

There are a number of service bulletins that also apply to your motor concerning the cooling system. That is probably why you see some scoring on the cylinders.

Talk to a knowledgable dealer and have him look up the bulletins that apply to your motor.

Thanks seahorse if you would happen to know where I could get my hands on these bulletins I would be grateful. The only mechanic we have here is kind of flaky and doesn't want to hand out any info unless he can jerk your arm off.

The correct waterpump kit will have 2 modifications, the spring and the relocation of tattle tale nipple on the block. The temp sensor located on the block should have a pig tail about 7 inches long, tan with blue stripe. The 93 should have the later carb jets and thermostats seats. Prop to 6000 rpms.

Re: VRO 1993 evenrude 70

Well fellas I have dug into this engine and found out this guy never took it back for the up grades.
It got hot and the horn never sounded so it shut down. BTW there is a little red switch on the side of the motor. What is that for?
I have now got all the up grades comming so wish me luck

Re: VRO 1993 evenrude 70

If the little red switch is on the primer selonoid, then it's the manual override in case the primer selonoid goes out. That way you can manually prime the engine. Looks like a little lever? Should be inline with the selonoid...
