VRO connections

Ok here's my dilemma. I need to connect up two 4 wire VRO units to my Johnson V8. Unfortunately the connections are three wire on the harness (There also very corroded from being disconnected for so long). Is there a conversion kit for this?? I seem to recall mention of this in several posts in different locations.
A parts shop just told me there is no such animal and I thought I would toss this out here for all the experts the chew on.
Please do not try to tell me the dangers of the VRO pumps as I like not mixing oil, and believe with proper maintenance they are very reliable.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Re: VRO connections

The conversion kit, that was part of the vro update from three wire to four wire, came with the four pin amphenol connector and a length of purple ignition wire. This wire will attach to the terminal board on the powerhead, marked purple for the ignition wire. This powers the warning module on the pump making it more reliable.

You can check with a local service shop as they may have extra harness adaptors that were not used when they swapped out another vro. If not you can make one up yourself.

Hopefully this helps.

Re: VRO connections

I think I may have to make one myself. The parts folks don't seem like people who buy used parts on eBay.
Making one myself sounds like I would need to cut off a 4 wire harness connection from a couple of junk engines.
Do you have any other substitute suggestions?? I really wanted to get the connectors to have it as close to OEM as possible.

Thanks for the Ideas!

Re: VRO connections

If you splice into the purple lead coming from the vro module, you can butt connect a length of tinned, purple wire, with an eye connector over to the terminal board on the pwerhead. This applies to both pumps. This way you can leave the three wire connectors connected and still have ignition power going to the vro warning module. Be sure to clean up the original three wire connectors first with a good electrical contact spray (from any auto parts store).

Hope this helps.

Re: VRO connections

Thanks for the detailed description. there is one thing that still will not work as I would want. The four wire connection "Phenol connector??" The four wire and 3 wire fittings will not connect together. Guess I could individually connect them but that would be a bit sloppy.

Re: VRO connections

Sorry for the confusion. Unfotunately, without that extra four wire amphenol connector and purple lead, that is your only option. You can splice both leads from both modules together and tie it into a single four wire lead going over to the terminal board. This will eliminate the need for two sets of butt connections. You can also buy a can of liquid electrical tape to seal the connctions against moisture.

Re: VRO connections

Hi O/B tech

Thanks for all the advice. I have found a good substitute for the four wire connector and a good source for marine wire splicing.
http://www.posi-lock.com/index.html
This site had some very inovative connectors and had a 4 wire connector that will do exactly what I need and still look professional. Perhaps it may help someone else that has this sort of wire connection need.

Now I have another question about the wireing for the VRO alarm system.
The previous owner or whoever disconnected the VRO system, cut the tan wires (2) at the harness and removed the remaining wire so I don't see where they should connect. The manual just shows the general diagram and is not specific. Got any guidance for this??
