Just launched my pontoon with a1997 evinrude 40hp with vro oil injection. On way to slip the motor @full throttle would run at half speed then full & back to half , vro warning buzzed several times. I either turned off or let set for a few minutes, had to squeeze fuel bulb to get her started for the short ride meyby half mile to house. This erratic throttle plus oil alarm seems like a pump issue?? I hear the vro is costly for a 97 yr,just as soon replace with manual mix , any thoughts appreciated. Chk. comp.(on my thread yesterday) @ 90 and 92 psi.

Re: vro disconnect possible?

I’m in the process of the same thing on a ’94 Johnson 150. I did a search in the “search forum” of this category and found a couple of tips. One post said to disconnect the oil line and plug it off and unhook two electrical plugs to it at the motor.

I also have a ’96 Johnson 175 fast strike and I had it disconnected by a reputable repair shop and I looked and that’s exactly what they did. 1) Where the oil line goes into the motor they unhooked the line and put a plug on the motor side fitting. This is under the side cover where the wires and lines go into the motor. 2) They removed the entire oil canister and disconnected the 2-wire harness that goes from the canister to the motor. This wire also passes through the side cover and has a plug inside the motor cowling they simply unplugged. 3) They also unplugged the 4-wire plug that runs the oil pump itself right at the pump in the motor. I can’t find anything else they did and it's been running fine for a year or so.

When I got it back I had to estimate how much gas was in the tank and mix oil in it and because there wasn’t a good way to purge the fuel line and they didn't mix the oil in the gas first, they recommended I run it at idle for 10 minutes or so to make sure I had mixed gas in the carbs before I put it under a load. I suppose you could mix your gas first, run it and then unhook the vro system.

Re: vro disconnect possible?

hanks ma pa found a great u tube vid. that walks you thru the disconn. and u are spot on. My other concern is a fuel supply prob. too, this could be as simple as the line and bulb. Bet its the pump tho.. little unsure of what kind of pump for fuel( vro vs non vro) or a standard pump?? also in past ive replaced the "diaphram" on other motors but is there another fuel pump besides the diaphram?

That behavior could be caused by a bad anti-siphon valve, and possibly overheating. I recomend you rule those out before blaming the VRO pump.
