How do i disable my vro on a 1988 evinrude 150xp? Im not starting a debate here, everyone has a reason to disable or not to disable......ive not faired very well with automatic oiling systems, and i dont trust them anymore than our government ;-) , i can mix my fuel right on the money, just need to now what steps i need to perform to disable ....is it as simple as plugging the hoses on the vro pump? Or is it more involved? Thanks guys...

Re: vro disconnect

The above procedure is to convert to using the existing VRO fuel pump-fuel side only. If the pump is inoperable, there is an alternative to the procedure mentioned above. Check out the factory parts list for an 83 V6 on this site: epc.brp.com It will show the two pumps and hoses that were used the last year prior to the advent of the VRO pump. The only thing is that you will need to add a second fuel pulse hose barb on the front of the intake manifold-to drive the second fuel pump. (it is already machined into your intake and has a plug in it from the factory.)

(VRO Pump Conversion To Straight Fuel Pump)
(J. Reeves)

You can convert the VRO pump into a straight fuel pump, eliminating the oil tank and VRO pump warning system, but retain the overheat warning setup (and fuel restriction warning if so equipped) by doing the following:

1 - Cut and plug the oil line at the engine so that the oil side of the VRO pump will not draw air into its system. Trace the wires from the back of the VRO to its rubber plug (electrical plug) and disconnect it.

2 - Trace the two wires from the oil tank to the engine, disconnect those two wires, then remove them and the oil tank.

3 - Mix the 50/1 oil in the proper amount with whatever quantity fuel you have. Disconnect the fuel line at the engine. Pump the fuel primer bulb until fuel exits that hose with the tint of whatever oil you used. Reconnect the fuel hose.

That's it. If you want to test the heat warning system to ease your mind, have the key in the on position, then ground out the tan heat sensor wire that you'll find protruding from the cylinder head. The warning horn should sound off.
