Parts diagram shows a nipple on top of the tank as "oil return". On mine there's nothing connected--just open to atmosphere.
Something missing, or normal? The diagram doesn't show a connection either but it doesn't seem right to be left open.

Need a model# of the motor. Most VRO tanks do not have oil returns on them

When I look up your model# doesn't even show VRO on it. Just a standard non-vro fuel pump

Found it on evinrudes website. There is no return line on that pump. Put up a pic of the tank there should be no return line on a VRO tank.

Maybe a PO replaced the tank.
Since the fill cap has a vent I think I'll just cap the unused return nipple.

Well, a vro system or regular pump appear to be options: http://www.iboats.com/BJ40PLSSM/dm/c...iew_id.1534514 I think the oil tank is shown in the marine engine accessories section -- must be on iBoats as well, probably in an accessories section for the year.

Is your motor running on premix, or with the vro hooked up? If the oiling function was bypassed by a PO, the oil line would be plugged and the harness disconnected -- making the oil tank irrelevant.

Hmmm...it's not mentioned in the 2000 owners manual that it's an option--all mentions of oiling or fuel assume it's hooked up and working.

How long has oil injection been around for outboards? It's listed as an option for my 1980 Mariner.

They made 2 different versions of your motor one with fuel injection one without just depends which one you bought. Oil injection has been around since the early 80s on outboards. The only two that were any good at first were the Yamaha or Suzuki systems. The american outboards did not get good oil injection systems until about the later 80s
