VRO problems. I think

Low oil alarm sounds when motor is first started. Oil tank is full. In order to make it quit sounding all I have to do is turn engine off. Then I can emediatly restart. Then it will do it again and I have to repete the process several times. Sometimes for thirty minutes or so. Engine also cuts off and I have to pump gas bulb to get started. This will also happin several times. After a while the motor will run fine the rest of the day. People have told me that it sounded like it was the VRO pump. I took it apart and cleaned it up and saw no holes or rips in either of the dioframes. Could the electronics in the VRO still be bad? What makes the pump work? Does it work off of vacume created by engine? Could there be a vacume line leaking? HELP! New VRO(5004558) is $269. :(

What kind of tone are you getting? Is it a steady tone or does it beep every second or two? There are diffrent tones for diffrent faults.

Premix your gas 1:50 with oil till this is solved, otherwise you could cause serious damage to motor. Also every time a part of VRO system has been disassembled, hoses taken off etc, run first couple of hours on premix until oil consumption is verified, mark level on oil tank with removable marker. Extra oil wont hurt, only smoke a little.

Also anytime you disconnect the oil inlet hose from the vro pump,it is necessary to reprime the line by leaving it disconnected and gently pumping the oil rservoir bulb until pure air free oil is weeping from the hose. Then reconnect and follow G Danes' recommendation on the premix.

Rapid short tone alarm is the "no oil" alarm from vro.The "low oil " alarm is one short tone every 30 or so seconds.

Might also want to inspect and insure that the oil reservoir pickup filter is clean and clear in the oil reservoir and that the reservoir itself is venting properly. If the oil hose bulb is colapsing while engine has run for a spell,it is and indication of a flow problem from reservoir or a defective bulb. You would likely get an alarm as well.

A common problem with that style motor is air leaking into the oil line from the plastic fitting on the front of the motor, port side. The plastic nipple can get a hairling crack, or the oil hose gets brittle, or the clamp is not secure. Check both ends of the fitting.

Also refer to the FAQ section, part F., here concerning the VRO pump operation and history.

Make sure the pulse limiter is not carboned or the pulse line kinked.
