I have a 1989 70hp Johnson outboard. The engine runs fine as long as I keep pumping the fuel bulb on the gas line. If I don?t pump, the engine stalls out within 5 minutes. I was told it the VRO pump. I got a quote on a new VRO pump kit?it?s a bit expensive. I was thinking of going with non-VRO pump. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS??

Re: VRO Pump/Fuel Problems

Several simple, easy to fix and inexpensive things can cause the same symptoms.

Restricted venting of the fuel tank, restrictions in the fuel pickup or fuel lines, air leaks in the fuel lines will all cause your trouble. The primer bulb is a much stronger pump and can overcome those problems. Check them out before you waste bux replacing a pump that may not be broke.

Suggestions ???
Listen to JB's excellent advice and then and only then consider a pump replacement. Premix pump is much cheaper and then you mix your own gas. You can I believe rebuild the fuel side of a VRO pump, disconnect the oil side and run premix. There are many threads on the subject that you can use the search function for.
