I am looking for some advice on whether I can use some kind of epoxy to glue the top hose nipple back on to the top of the fuel/VRO pump. The motor is an "87" Evinrude 70 horse.

I was tracing a fuel leak and the top nipple was cracked and when I tried to remove it, part of the pump case chipped off. I really don't want to spend $230 or more on this thing.

I talked to the local hardware store guy and he thinks JB weld would do the trick, don't know if I trust his opinion tho. Don't want to call a marine dealer cause they are gonna tell me that I need to replace(money in their pocket)the pump.

the heath of your motor relays on this part i would buy a new one or look on ebay 230 bucks sounds like a lot but it's cheaper then a new power head when a cheap fix fails. you can get a fuel pump and premix cheaper

Re: VRO PUMP ?

I guess I should add this is the nipple that the fuel mixture comes out of not the oil intake nipple. I guess what I really want to know is how much pressure that thing delivers and would an epoxy or JB weld type of product work.

And I did check ebay, and I don't really have confidence that someone would have a good used VRO/Fuel pump just laying around. The price that I got was off of an internet site rather hasitily found at that, and it was a new part not used or refurbed.

well, i would rather trust that ebay VRO than expoxing the fuel inlet nipple back on. if anything you could try to swap out parts. you are just looking at a fire or explosion if the repair doesnt hold.<my guess is it wont> good luck.

Re: VRO PUMP ?

Hi svangui,

I have 2 x 40hp Evinrude Vro on my fishing boat. One fishingtrip out on the water, one motor would not start. I tried pulling the hose off the nipple on top of the VRO and it broke clean off. Being on a 2 week outing, I decided to not spoil my fun and bought a fibreglass kit and fibreglassed the nipple back on. Cut the mat into 1/2" strips. That was 3 years ago and it's still running good. Just be carefull to not fibreglass the 2 pump halves together in case you wanna do a rebuild in future.

I can even post a photo of my "quick fix" if u wish.

Good luck

Ps the original starting problem was caused by the clipon fitting from the tank popping off. Could kick myself........

I gotta' agree with 2K Boat - I can understand some type of mickey-mouse repair to get back to port in an emergency - But geez, in the event it develops a leak you're risking life, limb and property. How much is your life worth?

Fix it correctly, replace the pump.

-John

never even thought of the fire thing good call if you haven't fixed it yet you could ask you dealer if he has a bad one with a good cover and make a good one out of 2 bad ones

Re: VRO PUMP ?

Thanks for all the input, I am in the process of getting my hands on a used pump.

The way that nipple was just hanging there I am surprised the thing ran at all, I just touched the gas line where it hooked to the carb lines and the gas just came pooring out. I am surprised I didn't have more problems.
