Taken From the VRO to Premix Sticky Here:

"Now cut the oil line about 1 ? inchs from motor. Plug the oil line. I use a bolt and hose clamp."

After this step i can actually remove the entire oil line to include the oil reservoir can i not? I am assuming the clamp and bolt is to avoid a mess while removing the entire line....?

Re: VRO to Premix

The clamp and bolt is of course for the purpose you state BUT its main purpose is to prevent the VRO from drawing air.

(VRO Pump Conversion To Straight Fuel Pump)
(J. Reeves)

You can convert the VRO pump into a straight fuel pump, eliminating the oil tank and VRO pump warning system, but retain the overheat warning setup (and fuel restriction warning if so equipped) by doing the following:

1 - Cut and plug the oil line at the engine so that the oil side of the VRO pump will not draw air into its system. Trace the wires from the back of the VRO to its rubber plug (electrical plug) and disconnect it.

2 - Trace the two wires from the oil tank to the engine, disconnect those two wires, then remove them and the oil tank.

3 - Mix the 50/1 oil in the proper amount with whatever quantity fuel you have. Disconnect the fuel line at the engine. Pump the fuel primer bulb until fuel exits that hose with the tint of whatever oil you used. Reconnect the fuel hose.

That's it. If you want to test the heat warning system to ease your mind, have the key in the on position, then ground out the tan heat sensor wire that you'll find protruding from the cylinder head. The warning horn should sound off.

You know what Joe, thanks. I was thinking about that in reverse. Bolt in the side you remove. I didn't even think about the hose coming OFF the VRO. Dummy moment. Thanks for the help. Have a good one. Cheers!

Re: VRO to Premix

Follow up question. The conversion went successfully. My engine seems to be running a little stronger now and a bit higher on the idle side. Is this normal once you do the conversion?

Don't know if it's normal or not.... perhaps the VRO was running somewhat on the rich side. You can always lower the idle via the adjustable trunion on the threaded portion of the throttle cable where it clamps in at the engine.

We just ran the boat around the bayou and I noticed a lot less initial smoke. The idle seemed to even its self out. So I think you are correct on assumin that the VRO was running too rich. I'm glad I converted it. Cheers!
