Hey

My 1989 70hp Johnson motor currently has a 3 wire VRO fitted to it. I am only using the fuel side of the pump at the moment with the oil side disconnected. I am sick of mixing my own fuel however and have managed to find a friend with two brand new pumps P/N 5004558 and P/N 0175160 (ss 438406) who is willing to sell it to me for a quarter of the price of one from a dealer.

Which pump is the correct one for my engine? I am assuming the 0175160 contains the three wire conversion harness on it but Im not sure because there have been so many part number changes over the years..... is the 0175160 one of the newer OMS pumps?

Anyhow if the 0175160 isnt suitable is it ok to use the 5004558 and wire the purple wire to the engine wiring terminal myself as detailed in this link??? http://www.outboardmotor.biz/t/004967.html

Cheers

Re: VRO Which pump?

The best online cross reference I've found so far is:

http://www.dixiemarinesales.com/VROpump.aspx. www.maxrules.com might also have cross reference, or you might find something by typing in those part numbers to a search engine.

As you can see There are only 4 current P/N's for VRO/OMS Pumps, and there's a long list of supercedes for each. The current P/N's are

5007423 - for 3 wire pumps, converts to 4 wire...except 2 cylinder
5007420 - for 4 wire pumps except the engines listed for 5007421
5007421 - for 4 wire pumps 2 cyl. 40-50 hp and 3 cyl 60 TTL
5007422 - for premix applications

The two P/N's you listed:

P/N 5004558 = 5007420. Therefore not for your engine. My understanding is that it's the same as 23, except doesn't have 3 wire->4 wire conversion parts in it; you'll have to buy those separately. My understanding is that the 4th wire just makes the alarm system more reliable, but doesn't affect the oil/fuel mix.

P/N 0175160 (ss 438406) = 5007423 according to the Dixie Marine chart referenced above. (0438406 is listed as a ss by 5007423, but I don't see 0175160 listed?). Double check though. I have NO idea if there were any changes at all from 0438406 to 5007423.

FWIW, best price I've seen for 5007423 is about $300 + shipping on line (usavemarine), about $450 locally.

Re: VRO Which pump?

Cheers for the reply

As you said it looks like P/N 0175160 was superseded by 438406 and it should contain the kit to change from 3 to four wires. I know that 438406 is an OMS pump however Im not sure if 0175160 is the OMS design. I have a feeling it was a VRO2 pump with the 4 wires.

Is there any way to find out if 0175160 is an OMS pump?

Obviously I want to try and get the newer OMS pump as it is supposed to me more reliable than the older VRO / VRO2 pumps.

The other pump P/N 5004558 is the OMS pump but it doesn't come with the 3 to 4 wire kit. I have called my local johnson dealer trying to see if they can source me the wiring harness for it but they were useless / didnt know what I was talking about or want to help. I cant find a parts diagram anywhere for the 5007423 so I can get a part number for the wiring harness..... Im located in Australia thus the number of johnson dealers is minimal.

Anyone know the part number for the wiring harness which converts 3 wires to 4?????

Re: VRO Which pump?

I just ordered a "23" pump from usavemarine.com. I haven't received it yet, but the prices were the best I could find ($300+ shiipping). I asked them a couple of quesitons via email, and they replied quickly with good info. You might try contacting them. YOu might simply contact them with the part number, asking them about the application and if you need anything else.

FWIW - that part number looks very similar to the original part number for my "3 wire" VRO2 pump on my '90 J200. My GUESS is that what you're looking at 0175160 is a VRO2 pump for a 3 wire pump, probably without 4 wire conversion. But I really don't know

I've also had extremely good luck with advice and parts sourcing from mastertechmarine.com (AKA maxrules.com).
