I'm looking at buying a 84' 50hp 'rude. It has VRO. How well did these early model VROs work. Any advice on how to check it out before buying.
Compression is good
Motor runs
Lower unit had water in it. (Seal Kit)
Tilt/Trim works good.
$400.00 with controls

84 is the one to watch out for. The VROs that had genuine problems were the originals of 1984. I suppose any good news is that those that would have failed probably would've done so already. I mean it's not like it was a kiss of death or anything. Find out if it's ever been replaced. Originals had black fuel-out fittiings. Replacements are gray or brown. The price is right.

Really would like to get this old girl up on her feet again.
I'm gonna put her on and old Pontoon and use it for crappe fishing.

Hey Willy, I checked the model # and found out it is an 1988 50HP. I did look at the fittings and they are brown. But it looks like the VRO is not working. I couldn't find any oil hoses or tank. It looks like the PO was just mixing the gas. I'm gonna get it working though. Trying to find an OEM service manual for the old girl. Any ideas where I can find one?

If it's currently not working then why bother with it? Just mix the gas and have the peace of mind that you know without a doubt that the mixture is correct and you don't have to worry about the VRO failing and frying your motor. If it's all still hooked up and simply not working I'm not sure if you should disconnect /bypass it or not. Maybe someone else will respond to that.
