I am considering buying a 1987 wahoo 16ft skiff type boat. Anyway I understand they are not manufactured anymore and would like some opinions if it is a good boat and any known problem areas. The boat has a 70hp nissan motor , I really wanted a boston whaler but the wahoo is at a very good price and looks like a nice boat thanks in advance

Re: Wahoo 16ft

The maker of wahoo as I understand it was a whaler engineer who left to build his own boats.

I even think that there was a law suit by whaler that the guy from wahoo eventually won.

I had a 1988 twin console that was a great boat.

One of the only bad things whaler had was a completly filled inner hull with floation. This would cause them to take on weight over time, as the water would stay in the foam.

Wahoo sought to remady this with "channels" or "voids", allowing the water to drain off the inner hull.

The only bad thing I would say is that the modified V hull will beat the tar out of you in choppy sea's. The wave will get trapped between the "V" and the "whatever you call them that extend down from the gunwale" and it transfers all the energy right to your teeth.

The good thing I would say about them is in this story. The boat I was in was a wahoo.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=006252

pbailey

Re: Wahoo 16ft

Never lost a Whaler customer to a Wanttabee errr I mean Wahoo :D but I did get to know them real well. Very well made boats. If I were ever going to be in the market for a small fiberglass boat Wahoo would be in the top 3 on my list.

Whaler
Wahoo
Arima

Link
PS great story..pbailey
sent it to my fishing partner :)

Link,

I wasn't trying to say that wahoo was better than whaler. I was just repeating the sales hype that was used at the time that wahoo came out.

I think the taking on weight issue was resolved when whaler went to closed cell foam.

I don't know for sure because I've never checked out the specs on whalers.

One of the things I left out of that story was about the 36-39 foot scarab sport that came by me like it was a regular day on the bay, like it was no big deal. I took one hand off the wheel and tried to get his attention, but he just went screaming by.

pbailey

pbailey
Naw I was just having fun :)
Had a good friend who used to sell Wahoo's when I was selling Whalers and we used to razz each other all the time. He would call and ask if I'd turned any of those Water Logged Whales today etc :) And yes I think the closed cell foam worked out well.

36-39 foot scarab now thats a boat for heavy water!
Link

Re: Wahoo 16ft

gee thanks for all the info on the Wahoo, I tried it out last weekend and I really like it. The ride isn't to bad for a small boat and I really like the design. thanks again for all the info!
