I'm buying a 16 wahoo 1987 , the boat hasn't been used in a few years and needs some TLC. The big issue is the internal gastank which is mounted under the center bench seat has problems. I'm told that there is a anti siphon or one way valve that is stuck and not letting proper gas flow to the engine. The engine runs fine with an external 6 gallon tank. Anyone know what I'm talking about one marina guy siad I may have to cut part of the fiberglass off to get access to the tank any info would really help. Thanks in advance

flotie,

I not sure which model you have, but if you have the twin console, you might be able to cut the area between the seats to allow enought access to the tank. You might be able to find a hatch at Boats US or West Marine.

They make hatches in various sizes, so you might be able to find one that fits on the bench and gives you enough access to service or replace the tank.

Do you have the center console? I'm not sure how the tank is installed in that one, but the same fix could apply.

You can check both of those stores online for hatch sizes and see if you can make that work.

pbailey

Re: Wahoo internal gas tank problem

unless you can get to the fuel tank, with out cutting up the deck- i would pass!
-
or have the tank pressure tested before you buy.
-
now if its a really good deal - only you know for sure.
-
dont know what make or size motor you have, but J/E require atleast a 5/16inch draw tube in the tank for V4, 3/8inch for V6/V8. (also recomended for the V4)
tempo, attwood & moeller only have a
1/4inch draw.
-
this is a problem i am having also.
my inboard tank needs to be replaced & cutting up the deck is not an option due to the layout of cockpit.
- the hull has to be seperated.
so i have to run portable tanks too, but J/E only have 6gal tanks. i have delt with 2 6gal porties & 2 5gal storage -
i didnt like that feeling of all that gas in different places on the boat.
especially with a chain smoking fishing buddy!
-
just something to consider.
i know now to look for a boat that has a factory hatch to remove the tank.
-
if the price is rite????? only you know!
