It's often been stated that the road to H-e-l-l is paved with good intentions, it just might be true,,,

Big misconception about diabetes. As long as they monitor their blood sugars, they can eat sweets.

My wife is a type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetic. You should see the amount of sugars we pour into her when she has a low blood sugar episode.

That "pouring of sugars into her" I'm sure sends her too far the other direction though.
One 8 oz. glass of O.J. is more than enough to raise the blood sugar to satisfactory levels.
Does she check her b.s. level often?
I've been type I for 28 years, check my b.s. 7-10 times a day and take 4-6 injections per day.
Last hba1c was 5.9. A non diabetic would be 4.5 - 6.5.
I used to pour in the sugar during lows too only to find myself in the 2 or 3 hundreds an hour later.
Just hopin she's takin good care, as it is possible with alot of perseverance. :)

It's funny how you all read my mind. We're dealing with Mother-in-law right now and her diabetes( Type 2) and hypoglycemia. All the things she could do wrong she did. She's been here for 2 weeks now and hubby is trying to teach her how to eat right so she doesn't have to eat the candy and sweet stuff and we got her off that medication that was drugging her out of her mind. I hate doctors that prescribe too many meds.!! . There are certain times of the days for certain kinds of foods and that's that! No other way and then it's not such a battle. But, try telling her. 73 yrs. old and stubborn as h*ll. ;)

I understand that dilemma Bassy.
I tried to educate my then 79 Y.O. grandmother about diabetes to no avail.
Lost her in 95 at the age of 84 due to a stroke.
I'm pretty sure the diabetes played a part in her stroke.
As far as doctors go, I hear ya there too. I truly understand why it's called a "practice".
The best and fastest way to elevate the blood sugar is O.J. or honey. There's plenty of natural sugar in both therefore it doesn't have to go through several processes by the body to make it useable.
Unlike a candy bar or soda, O.J., honey and any kind of fruit contain natural or simple sugars which are quickly assimilated by the body.
Good luck ;)

Thanks, Topmason :)

We've gotten quite an education and know alot more about diabetes than we did two weeks ago. Her blood sugar runs low, not high, so it's the hypoglycemia that's the problem. I hear you about the simple sugars. It's seems so easy, but we have a junkfood junky here and trying to wean her off of it and teach her that she can have a little of what she wants if she eats right the rest of the time is more difficult than I think my husband can bear. May have to put her some place she can get the help she needs. Hubby's sister doesn't want to help, so it's up to him. It's a difficult decision for him. At least she isn't as sick as she was when we brought her up 2 weeks ago.( She was almost comatose because she wasn't eating right).
Thanks for listening. :) :)

Bassy, Good book for you It's called Suger Buster's. It written for Diabetics to control sugar intake. It is also the extreme form of the Atkins diet because not only does it cut down sugars and carbs, but also fat intake. Get the little shopping guide also big help. My doc put me on it because I wanted to lose 60 pounds. Lost 20 in one month then time change and holidays happen I been trying to get back on it.

Carbs are a big part of my wifes problem. She loves them. And candy. If you looked at her she looks healthy as anyone else. She still looks good in a bikini at age 45.

When her blood sugars are low Qrange Juice usually pulls her out. When her blood sugars crash, it takes whatever we can get her to eat.
I've been trying to gert her to monitor her blood sugars more closely. She recently changed doctors. Her new doctor flat out told her she would die if dhe didn't monitor herself better.
She is now testing about once every hour and a half. And is keeping her blood sugars in the 95-120 range.

Diabetes is a horrible disease. There is nothing scarier than coming home an seeing your wife flopping around on the floor, because she is having a low blood sugar incident.

Most diabetics have type 2, which is so easy to control with proper diet, habits (ie no smoking, excessive drinking) and excercise. (My wife has type 1, and other than monitoring closely is almost impossible to control)

I feel for all those who have diabetes.

One of my girlfriends in high school had diabetes and died during gym class because she did not monitor her blood sugar properly.

She wasn't even suppose to be in gym, but she loved sports so much, she just couldn't stay away.

Unfortunatly, thats all I know about this dreadfull disease.

Kenny

Well I feel for you all going through this. My mother passed away in 98 just before her 50th birthday, due to this.

She would not monitor herself regularly and it was eating her up inside. She was bound to a wheel chair for years and had to retire early. She changed doctors to get ahold of better pain meds, and that was all it took. She never could keep the meds straight. This new doc didn't know her history of getting meds mixed up. My sister was living near her and was suppose to be keeping an eye on her. This all happened while I was making arrangements to move her up near me.

Anyway, keep on them and use some tough love. Yes they will be pissed at you, but it is worth it. My mother was pissed at me the year before she died, because I made her stay on her diet while she was visiting for a month. She cut the visit short when she realized that my boys told on her when she was not staying to her diet.

I can go on a whole tirade about doctors and drug companies.

Its real nice when doctors are nothing more than retailers for the pharmaceutical companies.

Its even better when you have two doctors that are beholden to competing companies, and prescribe competing products that essentially do the same thing.

Better living through chemistry.

As for me, I haven't had a prescription in my whole life. And I am 44.

samagee, you have some good boys there. They knew the right thing to do.
Thank you all for your thoughts. It helps so much to know that someone else is experiencing what we are. Tough Love is Right!! We're trying.
For those of you fighting this awful disease my thoughts are with you. Type 1 must be so scarey. My Mother-in-Law is very lucky that she has Type 2.
It's very nice to have support. :)

Type I really isn't as bad as most think. You monitor your bs level, eat sensibly, and take insulin accordingly. I look at it as if my auto pilot has malfunctioned, I have to pilot my boat, or crash into the coast line.
I choose to pilot my boat.
Education about this disease is abundant as there are millions with it.
Ask any doctor, if you had to have a disease, which would they choose.
Diabetes, because you CAN live with it. I figure I could have got cancer instead of diabetes 28 years ago and died.
I used to look at someone missing a finger and think, "Dayummnnnn that must be terrible", until I took my left thumb off with a skilsaw a couple months ago.
Hence my signature, I live by it.
Cheers to ya'll. :)
