I use good ole Wal-Mart Supertech straight 30W and their filters in my boat. Am I crazy? Anyone know who makes Supertech? I heard it was Havoline. Anyway, it meets all manufactures ratings so it can't be that bad. Any thoughts?

Wal-Mart didn't become the largest company in the world by selling junk. From what I know of them, their private label suppliers are well-known, reputable firms, who in selling private label products to companies like Wal-Mart, do not incur marketing and advertising expenses for these goods. I've used it in my boat, other vehicles and lots of engines off and on for 10 years.

You are not likely doing any harm, I would check to see if it has the API, CH-4 rating. Walmart changes there supplier of oil like you change your socks, last time I actually checked into it, it was shell, before that it was Quaker State. Warren makes lots of it at times also. I have given up keeping track. Whoever is packaging it, if it has the API rating, it will be fine. There synthetic is a real sleeper for the price. Its a group III.

Why CH-4 and not CL-4 and more appropriately SL? You mentioned this once before in a thread and I can't remember what it was you liked about it.

Sorry I missed your question.

The "C" rating on any oil is a Diesel rating, which means you are going to get a very robust add pack.

I like the HD application of this oil.

I probably should not have said "Make sure".

CH-4 oils may be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4 and CG-4 oils.

Its OK if you see other ratings along with this CH rating such as CH-4,SJ. I dont think you will see an oil with the rating of CH-4,SL. I personally would never use a SL oil in a boat unless it was a synthetic. Just not enough of an add pack for me.

No prah Dude, just knew you would want to comment. Don't you really require or need the SL, S as in spark ingnited? C as in compression ignited? You know, get the right add pack for gasoline AND get the CL package too.

LubeDude,

I was taught that if the bottle says SL/CD, for example, that it was primarily for spark ignited engines, but met the CD diesel requiremments too. If it was CL-4/SG that it was primarily for a 4 cycle diesel engine but met the gasoline (spark) requirements of SG. If so, wouldn't the best combo for a spark engine be SL/CL-4? Is this correct?

Yes, but I dont see how you would find an SL/CL-4 because the two just dont go together. The additives in the CL oil dont work in the new designation SL. I could be wrong on this. Maybe TOD will clarify this for us.

Agree. Just was using them as an example of the latest and greatest for either.

So the order of the designations DOES indicate priority of service?

I imagine that this new SM oil will be fine in newer engines, but you are NOT going to find it in any of my vehicles ever from now on, nope, not me. Its a real weeny in the additive department.
