I want to purchase (to export to Queensland,Australia) a trailer-able Bayliner, from late 80's to maybe 97. The 2355 would be ideal, but will look at others offering similar layout etc. If you have something for sale, then feel free to e-mail me direct, with just the make and model you have, and I will reply advising you of what I am looking for. I have decided on a Bayliner as it is the only US boat sold here in numbers. Cheers. Kiwi Phil

Hey Phil,

One piece of general advice: Before heading out in this project, do your homework.

Brands are many - search these forums to learn what others think and experience. You'd hate to go through it all just to know you didn't get it right :(

There are plenty of boats in Aus - importing another sounds

If you want to get a 'collectors item' OK, but a standard Bayliner doesn't fall in this category...

Re: Wanted to Buy: Bayliner

Thanks for all the advice chaps. UU: I appreciate yours, and bondo, I have read everything in that link you mentioned. Thanks very much for that. iRich, wizeazz and Ryan T, :) none of your comments went through to the Wicket Keeper; I have taken them all on board too.
I am faced with a slight delema  . The only USA boat sold here in numbers is the Bayliner, and experience tells me I would be unwise to purchase something that is a "one of" in this country.
That is one side to the coin.
The other is price, and I will try and explain just how lucky you boaties are over there.
I have looked at the following US boats.
No 1. 1998 Bayliner Avanti (2x Motor) (very tired boat) asking Aud$77,000 = US$51,590
No 2. 1990 Bayliner Avanti (2x Motor) (reasonable condition) asking Aud$89,000 = US$59,630
No 3. 1995 Bayliner 2355 Cierra Sunbridge (good condition) Aud$65,000 = US$44,220
No 4. 1996 Bayliner 2355 Cierra Sunbridge SOLD Aud$58,000 = US$38,860
To export from USA is
Shipping (craddle) Aud$8,600 = US$5,762
Insurance Estimates Aud$1,500 = US$1.005
Duty into Aussie 5%
G&S tax 10%
I have not yet found out if the USA charge a tax on items being exported from their country.
I will have to incur costs for full survey, full sea trial and mechanical inspection/report, and valuation apprasial..
The nuts and bolts are:
If the prices on nadaguides.com are reasonably accurate, then I should be able to purchase a Bayliner 2335 for under US$15,000, then I am going to land it here for around US$25,000 which is Aud$37,332. That is a savings of just under Aud$20,000 = US$13,400(on the boat in No 4 above, and a whole lot more if I have to pay the prices shown in boat No 3 above.
Then there is a trailer. I see a lot of yours come on a trailer, ours don't.
There is an issue with shore power. Yours i believe are 110volt, ours 240volt, but it is not an issue if on a trailer, or you have a transformer installed.
Local boats are little better. A 1998 Haines ,6.8m, (21'),well fitted out but no mid berth,170hp outboard is Aud$73,000,(US$49,000).
I have imported before, from Europe, cars. My brother is a old Rodder in NZ and buys old stuff, usually a container or 2, from, I think the Bakersfield area, (in LA or thereabouts????).
I acknowledge there are pitfalls, but they can be overcome.
I want to visit Washington DC one day. Have a friend whose name is on the Wall. (is that what it is called????). I named my oldest boy after him. So this way, I would get my boat, a week off from the business, see what I want to see, and be pretty happy, and if I can find one on the east coast, get to see it.
The stumbling block is the name Bayliner  . You have all got me thinking pretty hard on that one. Surely there are good ones out there, and going by what you guys tell me, they got to be well priced.
Keep the comments coming.....I have no objection: I will keep an open mind, and appreciate them all.
Cheers
Kiwi Phil

Re: Wanted to Buy: Bayliner

Take this, mate:

First of all I'm surprised. I visited Qld > SA and there were plenty of great boats. Not only Bayliners. For fun I checked this Ozzie site and a Google search for 'used boats' (filtered by 'site:.au') yelds 43000 hits!

If you're doing a travel/purchase combo travel you must prepare. You won't have time for shopping much around, looking for and testing boats.

If you decide on the project at least make sure the hardware you get is best possible. Better pay the little extra and get it right - so again, study this site.

Won't mention my brand although I'm happy with it as I feel you need to make up your own mind.

For comparison you could check the European market here
