Still working on my 1980's Sea King.
(Wards/US Marine/Chrysler/Force 15 HP)
Model VWB-52122 Serial 58X-2655

The starter pinion gear does not rise to meet the fly wheel gears when the rope is pulled.

Does anyone know what causes the pinion gear to rise up the rope spool to meet the fly wheel. No parts are missing and the rope recoils fine since I put a new on on. I have two repair manuals that show this manual starter, but neither of them help.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Wards Sea King 15 HP Starter Recoil Assembly

I can't tell you specifically how that pinion gear works but speaking generically..
It should be lubricated with grease on the inside. There is some sort of spiral that raises the pinion gear as you crank the motor. It may be visable on the gear or the shaft. The The starter assembly is diffucult to take apart, aparently requiring the removal of the flywheel. You might try WD40 to loosen up the pinion then possibly some spray grease for more permanent lubrication.
I think these pinions are known to break so try not to abuse the starter assembly both in repair and use.

Thanks for responding.
There is no spiral, and there is nothing to make the pinion gear move up. There is a pin in the rope pulley shaft that keeps the recoil spring compressed inside the rope pulley shaft. The pinion gear has a slot that looks like it should ride the pin up and make the pinion gear meet the fly wheel when the rope is pulled. I tried cleaning the pinion gear but it still won't move on the rope pulley shaft.
I have a parts diagram but don't know how to post it here otherwise I could have shown you.
I don't know anyone who has one of these so there's nothing but diagrams for me to look at.
If any one out there has this starter setup, could you tell me if the pinion gear moves up and down the rope pulley shaft easily? Mine does not move at all!
Thanks!
