Hi
I have this 1991 evinrude 8hp with about 20hrs on it since new in 91. It starts fine when cold with choke.... Will run/idle fine... When trolling but will sometimes stall..... Could be within 10min or 3 hours of running but when try to restart won't fire up.... I need to choke it pull once and quickly shut off choke before it dies than runs good again until must be restart... Or with choke on and one pull won't start shut off choke pull agin and fires up like clock work.... Also noticed when accelerating wants to die.... I either feather the throtle till my revs come up than I'm good to go or one quick pull of the choke when accelerating revs come right up and good to go for hours.....would I be sucking air? Any ideas would help thanks....

Check your spark when it acts up. Should jump a 7/16" open air gap on a tester.

I have a 6 H.P. 'rude that was giving me about the same problems. My motor is a bit older than yours but has less than 40hours use on it now. My problem started out just as you are describing, then got to the point for it to run so I could troll, I had to pull the choke out about 25%. The problem got progressively worse. I finally put the motor on a stand, turned the gas jet control (needle valve) all the way closed (not too tight so you don't mess the tip up) and turned it out 1 & 1/2 turns, and started the motor. I adjusted this valve one direction until it started dying out then the other direction until it started dying out. Found a "Happy Medium" running position for this gas controller. Have not had a problem since. After that, I went back to using Sea Foam in my gas tank again which I have always used in my big motor.
