Warm up lever connection?

My 1976 Johnson 85 HP has an issue with the idle/warm up lever connection: I can manually move the the plate to the slow idle position shown in photo 1: but if the the warm up lever is raised, the plate remains in fast idle position (photo 2) even after the warm up lever is depressed. Obviously a connection/adjustment issue...but how should I proceed? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks,

Put your warm up lever in the down position. Then go back on your mtr and adjust the trunion nut on the throttle cable so it pulls it back to the idle stop.

You may open the bottom cover of the Command Center. Move the warm-up lever up and down to see if the cable moves. Check whether the nylon trunnion cap in the second picture is missing. If the cable has too much play or is broken, the lever cannot control the cam on carburetor.

Some forum members reported the trunnion cap was missing. Mine was missing. I bought one on the Internet last summer.

Make sure the cover is closed. The picture below was the command center when I bought the boat. The warm-up lever did not work.

My 72 Jonny has a small pin with an allen head screw that holds the throttle cable in place in the black piece that goes to the throttle linkage. When that small piece falls out you still get throttle and no warm up operation. You can look through the hole and see the inner throttle cable moving when it's out. The throttle range is greatly reduced too. You can't get WOT and the engine doesn't respond til the handle is about half way down. Your engine may be completely different (it is definately different in many other aspects) but since it took me 6 months to figure out what the heck was wrong with mine I thought I'd throw this info out there.

Thanks to all replies; I found the issue; the inner wire of the throttle cable was sheared. I'm off to the boat shop for a new throttle cable!
