Warner Tachometer Question

My Warner Tachometer pegs when the power is applied it remains pegged whether the engine is running or not. However, the power must be on. When power is off, the needle drops to 0.

It used to operate correctly and then is was intermittent. Now it doesn't operate correctly at all. The power in and ground out wires are good, but i can't be sure about the inner connections. I removed the tach and measures the resistance from the power post to the ground post. There was no continuity at 20K ohm setting.

is that normal? I ask because the growing post turns freely in place but does not come out I'm wondering if that is normal.

FInally, my multimeter has a tach function and when hook it up I can measure engine speed with it. Maybe I have a bad analog tack it's 42 years old so I can't complain.

Well, I agree that the signals have been pointing in that direction (new tach), but I hate to lose the original and matching face, even if I went with a new SW tach - it's not identical. I figured I had nothing to lose, so I first tried to remove the bezel of the tach and realized that 1) that's impossible with the tools I have and 2) once off, it will never go back on right. So off to harbor freight to buy a set of rotary saw blades to fit on the dremmel.

I removed the tach and made a circular cut to remove the bezel. Then, I slid out the interior working of the tach.my intention was to look for broken solder joints, but what I found made me smile. The post onto which the coil sender wire goes to was loose on the circuit board. The post merely bolts down through the circuit board where it contacts solder. With the bolt loose, it lost contact with the circuit for the tach. Given the operation of an analog tach, that's what makes tach peg.

Tightened the post down on the circuit board and slipped in into the boat sans case. Worked like a charm. I will use 4200 or maybe just gorilla glue to put the tach body back together. Assuming this continues to work, I saved about $180.

Thought I'd share this for others sake. Good luck all!

Love it...good for you!! Hate the "just pitch it attitude" what a waste when 9 times out of 10, if you're just willing to try......

1) You can save money (love being cheap)
2) Spare more junk in our land fills
3) Learning something and pass on value added knowledge.

Thx for sharing :thumb:

Wow I have to admit I would have tossed it and bought a new one. My tach went flakey on me but it was because of cheap regulator / rectifiers. Once I put in a CDI RR works like a champ.
