Warning alarm not working

2001 60 HP Merc 4 stroke. My warning alarm horn does not chirp when I turn the ignition key. I just hooked up 12 volts directly to it and it does indeed work just fine. I'm concerned that it may not work if an actual alarm is called for. Is there some way of testing it? Something to jumper under the cowling to test if it works should there be an actual alarm? Thanks..

Don't know your serial number so unsure, but see if you can find the Tan/Blue wire on the motor. See if itgoes to the temp sensor switch. Its a single wire sensor in the water jacket

Serial number is 0T230214. I did find the tan/blue wire buried in a harness but I haven't found where it exits yet. Is there a way to test my warning system from this wire?

Yes, if that wire is grounded the alarm will sound

When key is turned ON, it applies 12V to one side of the alarm. The Tan/Blue is connected to sensors, so if they close then it grounds the wire and alarm turns on

I followed the wire to a large plug that had about 20 other wires going to it. I unplugged it and opened the casing to see which pin the tan/blue wire went to. Put a wire on that pin and touched the other end to a ground (with the engine off but the ignition turned on) and sure enough the alarm went off. So can I safely assume that my alarm warning system is functioning even though I am not getting a chirp at start up?

Well thank you so very much. You've been a huge help to me. It's great having peace of mind knowing that such an important feature is working properly.

Brooky Hi, I have a 2005 4 stroke 115 hp and am new to boating. My boat also did not give a warning horn at key up. I can't say about your boat but came to find out that my motor which was built by Yamaha in those years, doesn't have a key on alarm. Now if your boat had a key on alarm and now doesn't that is totally different.

Anyway. I did as you and tested the horn to make sure it worked grounding out the tan wire in the forward controls and it came on. To assure myself that it would work during a malfunction I was told to ground out the oil pressure sensor while running. My oil pressure sensor was on the port side top of motor best reached removing the plastic flywheel cover. All I had to do was pull the rubber boot back from the top of the oil sensor and touch a jumper wire from the top of the oil pressure sensor to the side of the same sesnor (or engine ground) and my horn sounded immediately. That gave me comfort that the system is working. The oil sensor on my boat is designed to "open" the contact above 22 lbs pressure so not supplying a ground. If the pressure drops below that the oil sensor "closes" the contact and establishes ground.

Hope this makes sense.

Cheers,
