2002 Sea Ray 5.0 260 HP MPI Alpha 1 Gen 2. Took boat out and after a while started to get 2 beeps about 1 minute apart. Everything looked fine. New water pump about 2 wks. ago. Did it for about an hour. This happened a few years ago and it was the sonsor that senses water pressure was bad and replaced. I stopped for fuel and wiggled the connection and beep stopped the first time I restarted motor. If that was prob. I am thinking the sensor would not send signal. Did it reset itself by starting motor? Does the beep warn of anything else? I know it stores a code but I am far from a Merc dealer that I trust. What do these code readers cost to buy? I repeat--two beeps about a minute apart- Not low oil or low drive oil oe overheat. Thank you. RR

There are pricing links on the Rinda site, and in that link I posted.

Re: warning beep

As I stated earlier the boat is not near a mechanic that I trust and is closed on Sunday, but we used the boat all day Sunday with no problems or beeps. I called the shop and mech. thinks maybe a piece. of dirt might have been blocking a sensor and the beeping might continue even if problem is corrected until the boat is re-started. I will update when I get the code checked. Thank you. RR

Plan on boating for several years to come? Plan on doing some of your own troubleshooting repairs? Want to be the guy with the "special" tool that others want to hook-up with to help them diagnose their beep codes and hopefully they will kick in a few bucks or goodies for use of the tool?

Best $400 l ever spent.....and the 1 time I have used it so far would have cost me probably between $150-$200 had I needed to take it to a shop, do the diags then have them replace the part at retail that I was able to buy through the Internet. Already about 1/3 paid for.

Note that there are some $40 adapters depending on your exact year so read through carefully or just give them a call.

Re: warning beep

The last time I used a code reader was on a 93 Merc. car. Are they still the same where you plug it in and and you read the flashes? Thank you, RR

Re: warning beep

I've never used one on a car but the Rinda scanner will report codes, tell stats such as engine hours, temperatures, etc.
You then use this information along with documents Merc has put out in the manuals and go from there as some codes reported are normal depending on exactly what devices your particular boat has.

I believe you can read and download from Rinda's site what the scanner will do.

Obviously the p.c. software version can do quite a bit more than the hand held but it is much more expensive but what I would imagine most professional shops use.

Remember my reply above??????

There are no small code readers that will work on your 555 ECM, you need something like the Rinda Scan Tool at minimum to read the ECM.

Since the 555 didn't come out until about 2001 or 2, I doubt your car had one.

Re: warning beep

Just to clear things up-I said the last time I used a code reader was on a car in 1993. "Are they still the same". I completely understand your informative info. about what to buy. Nothing was said about using that on the boat. Thank you, RR
