Warning Horn & Tachometer Quit + Stupid Question

I am a first time boat owner:

I have a 1995 Johnson 112 SPL. I was out in my boat, the first time since my test run. I was running at speed when my warning horn came on and when I looked at my tachometer it wasn't registering. I shut down the engine and after a few minutes I was able to run normally with the tach operating. Any ideas on what the problem could be? Is this something that an amature can fix?

Now the stupid question: I have heard that there is some kind of tester, similar to the ones used to check coolant or batteries, to double check your oil/gas mixture. Have you heard of this? If so is it reliable? After hearing some horror stories of people messing up on their oil/gas mixtures, I wanted to be safe.

Thanks,

John

Re: Warning Horn & Tachometer Quit + Stupid Question

Hi John,
Did the horn stay steady on? That would indicate an overheating situation, but that would have nothing to do with your tach. not reading. Not sure of your problem, unless you picked up some trash around the Water Intakes on the lower unit and after you stopped it cleared itself. But that still does'nt explain the Tach. going dead. How long did you run it after you got it going again? Did it seem to run normally again? Since your Motor has no VRO, I assume you mix your own fuel and oil, so that would not be a problem. I believe on the '95 Model, you may also have an alarm for fuel restriction, too. Any other info you can give may help with your problem. Also, there should be no problem mixing your Gas/Oil as long as you use a 50:1 Ratio. 1 Pint oil to 6 Gal Gas. Or about 2.5 Oz per Gal of Gas.

The alarm was continuos. I ran for a good 25 minutes afterwards. Come to think of it, my fuel line became disconnected when I started up and then the engine died just before that run. Reconnected and I was making my run for the ramp when the alarm went off a few minutes later.

Thanks,

John
