Re: warning horn?

Reason I ask, I got a '90 60hp Johnson I bot from a buddy. Came with control, new cables and a new wiring harness. I've got the service manual for this motor which shows the control and how to check the horn. I can't get the horn to sound and the control (looking at it from the outside) looks like it doesn't have a warning horn.

I have the service manual and did the checks to test the horn and got nothing. The control is not the one that originally came with the motor, but doesn't look so old that it wouldn't have the horn.

What kind of control? Flush mount control or side mount? Flush mounts have a horn that just "hangs" with the control harness. Side mounts have the horn on the inside.

Re: warning horn?

It's a side mount control. I looked at the parts breakdown for different years models starting in '80. '89 and up you can see the horn from the outside of the control on left side. '88 and older the horn is hidden within the box. This control should have a warning horn.

Re: warning horn?

Motorvator....You can test horn by sticking a sewing needle into the tan wire comeing out of the heat sensor. No need to undo the knife connector, That rubber sheath is a bear to get off.

Take a jumper wire and attach to needle and touch other end to good ground. Head bolt, spark plug body, what ever.

Horn should sound off. If it dosent then you will have to open up control box and check and see if you have 12 volt positive connection to horn. Also that neg. tan wire is connected to horn.

Good luck!

Good luck!

Re: warning horn?

Also, there are at least 2 types of horns, one had 2 wires the other 3. The 2 wire horn only served as an overtemp alarm. The 3 wire horn serves as an overtemp, engine start (prop) warning and other alarm/warning functions. The 2 wire horn doesn't beep when the ignition is turned on. Not sure what year the 3 wire horn replaced the 2 wire one.

Re: warning horn?

I ground the wire from the sensor and stuck a thin peice of metal in the slot on the control and no warning sounded (with key on). Guess next step is to take control apart. Not as simple as it sounds. My control is bolted to an aluminum peice that is rivited to the gunwhale. Don't have anything better to except go fishing, looks like it might rain though.
Guess before I tear into it I should ask: this motor still has the VRO pump with wires disconnected and gas mixed.
Would this make any difference relating to the horn?

Motor!...If your takeing apart the conection at the motor. You know the little knife looking thing. You dont ground the wire from the sensor.

You ground the tan wire that goes back thru wireing harnes to control box.

Sorry if Iam not understanding what your saying.

Good Luck!

Re: warning horn?

Oh ya....I forgot to say, You dont have to touch any thing inside the control box. If your horn is gona work when you ground that tan wire it will honk. But the key has to be on....(I think)

Good Luck!

Re: warning horn?

I grounded the right wire. There's another tan wire coming out of the engine harness which I believe goes to the VRO oil tank. Grounded that one also. Still know horn.
