I simply like hangin' out on the Mall. The Air and Space Museum is awesome but not very romantic . . . :p :p :D

Re: WashingtonDC tell me.

well if ya like museums and such there is always the smithsonian.
if ya stay at the la Enfant plaza its a 3 min walk door to door and a metro station and a mall underground beneath the hotel.
beats driving in DC and no hunting parking spots. rooms were nice, mini bars and all.
did not care much for the hotel food though. I gotta go see the new air museum, ubekczi or something like that. maybe when I get back from the jungle fishing trip :) .

Washington D.C. is an excellent place to visit...Metro rail system, free museums, great tourist destination.

Make sure your hotel has a regular shuttle to the Metro stop, no need to rent a car. Fly into Reagan National...take the Metro to the hotel or it's pretty close to everything so a taxi fare will be a reasonable charge. Pentagon City and Chrystal City are two good areas to look in.

Call your representative's office to arrange a tour of the capitol building - they'll send an intern to show you around, it's great. If he can he'll arrange a private tour of the white house for you, all free of charge.

Air & Space is my favorite, American History a close second. Holocaust Museum is very intense, probably not a great honeymoon experience but don't miss it unless you think you'll have another chance at it in the future.

Stay in the capitol/national mall area, you'll be safe.

Dress warmly...but hey it's far better in the cold than the heat & humidity, IMO.

congrats! and have fun! oh, and say hello to GW for me. ;)

Here's the lowdown on the Smithsonian museums:
http://www.si.edu/

And a map of the National Mall

The Vietnam & Korean memorials, reflecting pool, Lincoln Memorial and Arlington cemetary are directly west of the Washington monument.

Re: WashingtonDC tell me.

You can always take a trip to Baltimore. Its only about 40 miles away and check out the Inner Harbor. You would be able to see both stadiums but no Orioles until spring. Raven's will be playing but a little tough to get tickets and the redskins are sold out for years so tickets cost big bucks. Fort McHenry is anther stop around town.
Just do me a favor. When you are in DC don't go where you don't belong and don't act like a tourist. There is bad people everywhere in the country that look for this sort of thing. Just seems to be more of them in DC.

"Firearms and Ammunition may not be carried by a passenger on an aircraft. However, unloaded firearms may be transported in checked baggage if declared to the agent at check in and packed in a crush-proof container manufactured specifically for the firearm or a hard-sided suitcase. Firearms must be in a locked container. Properly packaged small arms ammunition for personal use may be transported in checked luggage."

But don't take it on your White House tour!

I was kidding fellows about the guns, already learned my lesson about 7years ago i was target shooting with a 22 and put some shells in my pocket, later that afternoon i went and picked up mom from the airport, went to go through the metal detector and started unloading my pockets and there was the shells, secvurity came and i had to fill papers and got a really good questioing.

But thanks for all the info!

When we go ill stick to safe parts, but seems like every time i go to nashville or any other city i always end up in the projects or places i shouldnt be.

Re: WashingtonDC tell me.

thats why I like the la enfant, ya take the correct freeway exit and it takes you directly to the hotel parking garage, its a 3 min door to door walk to most of the smithsonian buildings and the metro station is below the hotel.
I was there in the summer of 04 but the white house was closed for tours. seems the terrorists won that one. it may be reopened now. if ya go to the veterans wall see how many names you can read before your eyes water so bad ya cant read. I did not get very far.
the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier is a moving thing as well.
a walk around Arlington cemetary is tough but worth it.
only thing I hate about visiting DC is I never have enough time to see and read it all.

Re: WashingtonDC tell me.

just travel along constitution and independence aves, you'll hit about everything you want. walk the mall, check out the monuments and memorials. if you venture anywhere else, go north. georgetown is a good choice for nightlife. stay away from SE and you'll be ok.

Re: WashingtonDC tell me.

Hey Ron -
Congratulations!

I live in the suburbs, close to DC and I think Rubber Frog does too. Maybe while you're here, we could all get together for a drink.

The weather is really unpredictable around here, but it'll probably be cold. Maybe in the 40's, but probably 30's. Sometimes with the windchill, it dips around 0.

Everyone is right - don't rent a car. Take the Metro (subway) or a cab everywhere. All the info you need about the metro is here: http://www.wmata.com/

There is a ton to see and do. You've got a lot of good advice about the museums.

If you're into it, you could also check out the National Theater or the Warner Theater.

If you like beer, check out The Brickskller - http://www.thebrickskeller.com/ or Gordon Biersch - http://www.gordonbiersch.com/

Don't worry about "the bad parts". Just use your common sense and you'll be fine.

If you need anything, give me a shout. jsfinn at gmail dot com.
