Once a year the town where I live has a waste oil drop-off day . . . what a beautiful thing :D. I got 20 gallons of oil to drop off.

I am wondering how many of you have a similar thing where you live ??? How much oil do you dispose of each year ??

I was thinking of getting a waste oil burner to heat the garage in the winter, but that may be just too much $$$. So, the town drop-off is a good thing for now.

Our community has a full service recycling facility. Open 6 days a week. Everything from appliances, batteries, cardboard, oil, metals, electronics, hazardous wastes, i.e. paints and pesticides, plastics and wood to reclaiming Freon from old refrigerators, dehumidifiers, etc.

Pretty sure any shop that does oil changes has to accept used oil if you bring it in. Well, NY was like that, I haven't dealt with it yet in VT.
Smaller quantities I cut cut with kerosene and used to start bonfires. I've also been slowly working on a waste oil stove for the garage, so I'll just burn it then anyway.

Yep, I am leaving in a few minutes to take my used oil to Autozone. Only limitation is that you can only take 4 gallons a month. I have 2.5 gallons, and that's from over 6 months!

Yup, in NY, if you sell oil (service stations and retailers), you are supposed to accept waste oil. Not all do.

My local auto store has a waste oil heater for the storage rooms and loves when you drop off free heat.

I also take mine to Autozone. I haven't been told about a limit. Pretty handy for me.

I have a drop off tank about 5 miles away. However, I use it for chain bar oil, starting brush fires, treating mange, pouring around fence posts and wood foundations on old barns.

Pretty sure any business that does oil changes has to accept your waste oil, here in Wisconsin.
But they can limit hours, and they don't have to accept your containers.

There are several collection sites in my town, drive up, open the cover on the 500 gallon tank, and pour it in.
Take your container with you.

I only have oil from the mower and atv now, so about a gallon a year.

Around here they have such days but Oil I drop at auto parts store, (autozone has a 5 gal a month limit so if more have wife drop off too). Paint you take lid off let dry out dispose of in trash, metals take to scrap yard ( most appliances exct refrigerators but the power company does free pick up). Tires have to take to turn in days but never have to many.

Well, we produce about 250 gal/year on average between all the trucks & tractors on the farm. If you have at least 200 gal, there's a service that will pick it up and pay $.30/gal. I'd love to have an oil burner, but until I'm just as happy to sell it!

In NY, it's pretty easy to get rid of waste oil just about anywhere that changes oil. I take mine to the garage that does most of my work for me. Now batteries, CFL & fluorescent bulbs, printer cartridges....possible but not so widespread.

Has anyone ever tried that?

Had about a quart and a half of paint sitting open in my garage for a year, it never dried out, only formed a thick skin on top.

Finally just dumped it on the roof and spread it out before we shingled it.

I do that all the time. Most dry out after a while, but you're right, some I have to keep going back and breaking the thick skin on top. I have a small firewood shelter and I just let them sit in. Usually forget about them but seeing them once in a while reminds me to poke thru the skin. Otherwise, sometimes partial cans sit so long in my basement that when I open them they are a solid chunk anyway!

I was going to an Auto zone near me. Now i take to a friend with a shop with a 1000 gallon tank. He sells it to a recycle guy. I wait till i have 3 or 4...5 gallon cans.

I'm one of those synthetic guys so i change less often.... :D
