Those are Western hemlock logs, and they don't always float very high in the water. And that photo is taken near the south end of Lake Washington, and on a windy overcast grey day (Which are not out of the ordinary in Seattle)<br />Log rafts like this can be pretty tough to see.<br /><br />Depending on the tightness of the booms, they can be quite a way off shore, and if you are navigating by visual sightings of shore, it is not at all surprising.<br /><br />Of course, if he was running at night, he would really have no idea they were there, and they could be as much as a quarter mile different if the wind changed directions.
