If using a water boot hooked to a hose, would it circulate enough water (if at all) if it has a bad impeller?
1963 Big Twin 40

Want to make sure it runs good enough to bother putting a new impellor in it. Speaking of which, how hard is it to do? And are other pieces of the pump usually replaced at same time? And if a screw from that cover dropped is taking lower unit apart only way to retrieve it?
Thanks in advance

What kind of boot are you using.-----You have to put a new impeller in now !----Lower unit ( gearcase ) is sealed.----No screws can fall into it.

If it is the same lower unit gear box i have on my 59 big twin than no you cannot use muffs to suply water to this motor evin if you had a good impeller. The inlet for the water is not in a position to do that.
Your best bet will be to drop the lower unit and use a hose to supply water through the pick up tube for the testing porposes. Then Replacing the impeller is just an i boats thred or a youtube vidio away. It will let you retrieve that screw to.

That motor has a complex-but-simple thermostat-controlled, recirculating cooling system. Makeshift testing will only serve to fool ya. It was made to run on a boat, on the lake.

This is my son’s “project” that I got volunteered to help with. I got it running but obviously can’t run it for more than a minute or two. He doesn’t want to spend time and money doing more unless it runs good. It doesn’t want to idle down low enough (IMHO) even though butterfly is closed.

Can you stick it into a garbage can? Usually if you block one up so the prop is near the bottom, and fill it with water, you can do an idle test of the motor.

Idle quality is caused by a clean carb, with the proper idle mixture adjustment.
