Water circulation pump and alpha 1 gen 1 questions

I have been trying to put together an 1998 Glastron 225GS hull for the last three years. It's fitted with it 84 MerCruiser 260 V8 and a 1988 alpha one gen 1. (Sea Ray white) I recently got the motor running but it doesn't appear to draw water very well. The outdrive is NOT installed. I'm running the hose straight into the inlet tube. Water is spraying out of the connection even with the motor running and very little appears to be coming out of the gimbal housing. The hose is barely turned on.
Second question, how do I tell if this outdrive is for a V6 or a V8? The people I acquired all of this from ended up selling their shop and they no longer have contact a lot of people anymore. So I'm a bit lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

with a hose in the inlet hole water should exit the motors exaust with no backpressure on the water inlet Either the therm housing is plugged up or the manifolds/risers are plugged up
To determine the ratio turn the imputshaft to see how many turns it takes to spin the prop one revolution 1.50 for V8`s 1.84 for V6

BTW, love the handle. My wife calls our boat "The Asstron". The GL broke off the first year we owned it, and she didn't want me to replace it. You can also pull the top cover of the drive and count the number of teeth on the gears to find the ratio.

All ya'all crack me up. (sorry, shouldn't a said 'crack'. My bad)

If you count the teeth, or check the letter stamped on the u-joint yoke, this chart will tell you what ratio you have.

Thanks! I thought it was appropriate with as much money we have tied up in it. When I move to a larger boat, I'm just going to hang on to this little money pit.

OK, the alpha is a 1.50. Good news there! Backflushed hoses, block, manifolds. All flowed smoothly. Adjusted my hose connection a bit and increased the pressure slightly. Free flowing wonderfully!
Unfortunately installed Fel-Pro 1205 intake gaskets. Have a slight vacuum leak where the intake meets the heads. I needed 1204 for my smaller ports. Parts store doesn't have any in stock, so I guess I'm moving on to the seawater hose and shift cable bellows tonight.
