I have a Evinrude 135hp 1973.

I was told that I sould replace the water deflectors while I have the head off. However, I can't find anything about a water deflector in my service manual, and sierra can't help me either. Is there another name for this? Is there such a thing in my year/model? Is this a snipe hunt ;0

Thanks!

Ted

Water deflectors are small pieces of rubberhose, Squeezed in between castings in block, routing water flow right around sleeves.

Ted.... Those water deflectors are simply a piece of rubber fuel hose with an outside diameter of 3/8". Go to any automotive type store, NAPA, whatever, and buy a foot or two of it.

Make sure that you cut the sections long enough to go the full depth. Clean the area with a small rat tail file, then use WD40 or some such lubricant to make the installation a little easier.

On your engine (135), there's a deflector between the cylinders, and another one between the bottom cylinder and the block. Their purpose is to deflect the water in a definite direction.

The problem is that the deflector between the top and bottom cylinder may swell sideways due to overheating or salt deposits, swelling to a degree outward towards the block so that it restricts the water flow, causing that bank to run hot.
