Water drip.

I have a Volvo Penta 2006 5.7 gxi, I noticed water dripping from under the engine. I took off the raw water pump thinking an easy fix but the rwp is in perfect shape. The water is dripping from behind the harmonic balancer. I have a mirror on a stick and will look on Wed but I am in a wheelchair and want to know what to look for before I climb down there. It drips at 2 drops per sec. Anybody have this problem or any idea what is under there?

welcome aboard

my guess is the circulating pump is dripping from the weep hole and running down on top of the balancer.

if this is the case, the circulating pump needs to be changed.

If you take the raw water pump off completely, you can try to replace the seal. Go to a industrial seal supply store and they can match it up for a few bucks. Replace the impellor while you at it and with some luck, you will be ok. The pump is $3-400, so for a couple hours of work, you may save a bundle and have more gas $$$. If it still leaks, the shaft is worn.

To bnicov, I have a rebuild kit but after having taken apart the complete pump assembly I can see nothing is wrong with the impeller or bearing. The water is dripping behind the balancer.
To Scott,I will look up the location of the circulating pump and check it tomorrow and report back. I have a pro coming to my house on Fri. I try but sometimes I have to give in and let the pro's do it. We'll see.
Thanks to both of you for trying to help.

It is the SEAL on the front that goes bad. It is IN FRONT of the bearing. It is a brown looking seal that has a spring in it. Just try changing that seal. Water gets past it when it gets old and comes off the balancer or the bottom of the pump. It really is a pretty easy fix.

Did you remove the balancer as well?. The back part of the pump containg the shaft, bearing and seal is attached to it.

Sometimes the only thing that makes them a pro vs amature is they charge for their work....

if its dripping on the balancer, it has to be coming from above. directly above the balancer is the raw water pump.

To bnicov, yes I removed the entire assembly. Nothing was wrong, the drip is coming from above and behind it.
To Scott. I have used the pro before. He is cheap and good and appreciate's how hard I try before I call him so it's all good. Except he couldn't make it on fri so I'll report back when he gets here. Thank's again to everyone for replying.
BTY Scott I just went to the Enzo museum and the F1 race in Monaco. Got free tickets from Prince Albert because I'm handicapped. Bucket list thing.
Great visit.Are you into F1?

When the circulation pump leaks, water gets past the seal, not the o ring going back along the shaft, through the bearing and out the back. The seal will look fine until you take it off. The pump shaft will have a bunch of crud on it which is the broken down bits of the seal. Some goo gone and a scotch brite pad will clean it off in all of 5 minutes. Put the new seal in and presto, pump is more than likely fixed. From all outward appearances, it will look fine. If it leaked out the front, the o ring would be bad.
