1994 Mariner, 175hp efi outboard. Picked up boat from repair shop over winter. Prepping for spring and was looking at the water / fuel seperator and noted two hoses that are not connected to anything. Have not had it on the water yet, but it does start and idles fine. Does anyone know if these hoses should be connected to anything, any help is appreciated !

Re: water/fuel seperator

You do need a better description or even a picture. Are you say there are hoses (fuel/??) just laying loose in the boat. Most filter housing have 4 spots for hoses, 2 in and 2 out. If they are connected to the fuel tank and not used, make sure they are plugged.
The main fuel line "MUST" be connected to an "in" hole to get proper filteration. I just went through this with a new repower. They installed a new Racor housing w/filter, but had the main fuel line connected to an outlet hole. I noticed I wasn't getting anything collected in the filter after siphoning the tank dry, I just thought for sure there sure be a little water/debris captured in the filter. I called RACOR tech line and was told that the way it was rigged, the filter would prevent particles from entering the fuel lines but would not stop water. Needless to say I switched lines pronto.

Re: water/fuel seperator

Thanks for reply.
The hoses are attached to the seperator at one end but the other ends are not connected to anything. While on the muffs running, no fuel leakage or fuel odor noted nor any leakage of any fluid was noted. Unfortunatly, the repair shop is out of state so taking it back to have them take a look is not an option. Could these hoses act like air breathers? Trying to avoid having boat tied up in the repair shop, since its the busy season again.
Thanks.....Firedude

They are not breathers. Not needed. Look to see if they are plugged. I'm wondering if the installer lost the 2 brass plugs and used those hoses instead.
