Re: water gets in engine different ways read please.

doing about 3800 rpm merc 5.0L washing the boat a little on the way, one guy decided to pour a bucket of water over the engine cover the water gets all over the coil / wire cap at that rpm the engine sputter and shut down right away. i try to crank the engine but it was hydro-lock water gets in the cylinders........................................................ my gess the long run offshore burns up the remaining water. so what happen here guys with the engine shutdown at high rpm it spun backward and pull water back in the cylinders??? next always have tools on ur boat.

hope this thread someone can learn something from it. bless

Howdy,

First of all, please put some paragraph breaks in any long post so it's a bit easier for us all to read!

You had a sudden "stoppage" of the engine (others have this problem when someone turns off the ignition key or the engine quits for some other reason when underway at "high" speed etc)

You probably had a "back-wash" of water into the exhaust system that got into open exhaust valves. It's probably not all that likely that the engine turned backward but it is possible...........

It's good that you cleared the water immediately. salt water will destroy an engine very quickly!

Rick
