I am restoring a 1971 merc 888 Ford 302, 188hp. I want to replace the water hose that runs from the transom plate to the engine water pump. The existing hose is "3/4"id standard heater hose". Is this the correct hose to use?

Re: water hose

The 3/4" heater hose will be fine if you are using the raw water pump in the outdrive. If you are using an engine mounted raw water pump, it wouldn't work.
When using the drives raw water pump, the hose "Normally" goes from the transom shield to a distribution housing on the intake, and does not go directly to the engine mounted circulation pump. (Note: there is a difference between circulation pump and water pump on marine engines)

Here is a picture of the circulation pump on the 888 engine.
Re: water hose

Thank you both for the input. You are correct, DonS, the hose goes to the distribution housing. The system is raw water pumped from the outdrive.
