Hopefully it's just a head gasket. You can try replacing it. If that doesn't fix it, it may be one of the exhaust cover gaskets.

You might be close to some one who can help.
Remove the head and see if the gasket is bad.(pnwboat)
Since it's an 85hp it at least 24/25 years old.
The bolts holding the head can be VERY difficult to remove.
They are put on with 20# of tourqe.
So if they don't come easy,your gonna need to take some time.
PB Blaster.A small propane torch and a hammer.
It took me about 3 hours to remove 4 bolts one day.

Not to scare you but I blamed water coming into #4 due to a cracked block (I could see the crack)
Check the block also. Do a compression test on all cylinders. Should be within 10PSI of each other.

Gregs the first cracked block I know about.
Not saying it could be your problem. But more likely a head gasket
